23 - 28 Apr : Mas & Air Asia's 1 Million Tickets On Sale

MAS AirAsia

It's the price war that's not price war. Just two rival airlines having a bit of fun by slashing their fares at the same time, Between them Air Asia and Malaysian Airlines will be offering more than one million tickets with Air Asia's lead-in special at RM1 for some domestic flights.

MAS has been shadowing the spectacular growth of AirAsia's low cost operations with increasing concern. The national carrier has this week been assessing the implications of AirAsia's US$2.3 billion order for 10 Airbus A330-300s with five options to fly long haul international routes.

The cost-efficient A330 aircraft will allow AirAsia passengers to fly to destinations in the UK, China, Australia and elsewhere in some of the most modern aircraft in the skies

AirAsia is offering low-price seats for international destinations with one-way flights from Kuala Lumpur to Macau from RM61 and Chiang Mai from RM41. Flights to holiday destinations like Phuket will cost RM21 or to Hanoi from RM51.

MAS' cheapest flight is for a one-way ticket to Penang, Johor Baru or Kuantan. The sales period for AirAsia is until April 29 for travel between October 1 and March 29 next year.

The MAS sales period for domestic tickets is until April 28 for travel between May 7 and May 22, and, June 14 and June 30 with some conditions.

Both AirAsia and MAS are offering the cheap fares for online bookings only and prices do not include airport tax and other surcharges.

Latest AirAsia promotion to salute airline’s 30 million customers

SEPANG: Pack your bags folks, AirAsia is rewarding travellers with a ticket for a mere 30 sen.

In its latest promotion to salute the 30 million guests who have flown the AirAsia Group in the past five years, tickets start from loose change – 30 sen to Jakarta and Bandung.

Fares to international destinations like Bali, Bangkok, Macau, Hanoi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Siem Reap, and Phnom Penh take off from RM30, AirAsia announced in a statement yesterday.

The AirAsia Group comprises AirAsia Bhd, Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia.

The booking period started from midnight yesterday and ends on March 18 for a three-month travel period spanning July 1 to Sept 30.

AirAsia said that all fares quoted exclude airport taxes, fuel surcharges and fees, and were applicable for one-way travel only.

Commercial Air Asia executive vice-president Kathleen Tan said that “The Grand Sale” was expected to stimulate travel with an allocation of half a million seats during the promotion.

“AirAsia guests have continuously exhibited high demand for low fares,” said Tan, adding that achieving the 30 million passenger mark proved that “low fares” ruled.

“We believe there are still many people out there who have never flown before and with our low fares, we can encourage people to fly and open up new first time flyer markets,” she said.

AirAsia is set to be an all-Airbus fleet by June. It currently operates more than 300 flights daily traversing 10 countries.

31 Jan - 6 Feb : MAS Offers 5 Million Tickets at 70% Discount

31 January to 6 February 2007

MAS Offers 5 Million Tickets at 70% Discount

Flight Travel must be from 24 February to 30 September 2007.

Bookings and purchases can also be made through the airline's website, http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/, or by calling the airline's 24-hour call centre
at the toll-free number 1 300 88 3000 in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: The five million tickets Malaysia Airlines is offering at its travel fair in two weeks' time will see discounts of up to 70%.

Air tickets purchased at the Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair (MATF) will also allow a longer travelling time period compared with offers in previous years. Travellers will now have nine months to do so as the offer will be valid from Feb 24 to Sept 30.

Last year, the cheap tickets had to be used within four months.

According to industry sources, MAS is keeping its price list secret until the last minute to prevent competitors from “stealing its thunder”.

“A good indication of what the fares will be like is to look at the International Supersavers that it is offering on its website. You can be assured the MATF fares will match those on the Internet, if not even cheaper,” said a source.

At present, the cheapest fare for a trip to Hong Kong on the MAS website is RM700 while the lowest price offered for a Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai flight is RM850.

The MATF will be held from Jan 31 to Feb 6 and is a 'virtual fair' as tickets can be bought at all travel agents registered with MAS.

Bookings and purchases can also be made through the airline's website, http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/, or by calling the airline's 24-hour call centre at the toll-free number 1 300 88 3000 in Malaysia.

The MATF, which is into its fourth year, is part of MAS' turnaround strategy to increase revenue during the low season.

Malaysia Airlines commercial director Datuk Rashid Khan said the promotion fares would be in line with the national carrier's new fare structure, which was launched on Monday.

“We urge our customers to take advantage of this opportunity and plan their travels with us well in advance,” he said, adding that the deals were not available for certain dates that were super peak travelling periods.

In the 16 fare classes under the new MAS fare structure, travellers who planned their trips early would be assured of cheaper tickets.

For the MATF last year, MAS offered discounts of up to 70% on European routes and 75% for some Asean destinations.

It is also learnt that the national carrier would again impose the same conditions as last year, where it allowed one-way airfare for passengers to make their return journey from another city but made it expensive for those who wanted to change travelling dates.

MAS is expected to reveal the number of seats to be made available for popular destinations for MATF at a press conference on Jan 22.

1 Million FREE Seats from Air Asia!

KUALA LUMPUR: A million seats are being offered for free as no-frills carrier AirAsia kicks off the new year with a big marketing bang that coincides with Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

Valid for flights out of Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Johor Baru, Bangkok and Jakarta – booking has to be done from today to Jan 19 for travel between April 1 and Oct 27.

AirAsia executive vice-president (commercial) Kathleen Tan said this was the second major campaign since the one in 2005 when two million free seats were offered in conjunction with the airline’s fourth anniversary and introduction of its first Airbus.

All free seats will be available only for online booking (www.airasia.com),and on a first-come-first-served basis. The offer excludes airport taxes and fees, fuel surcharges, and is applicable for one-way travel only.

More than 80 routes across 10 countries will be available for bookings

“A RM2 million regional advertising budget is in place to aggressively promote this 10-day campaign in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Macau, China, the Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia and Myanmar,” said Tan.

“With 50 aircraft in place and more Airbus A320 rolling out this year, we have recently added more new points from our two newly set-up hubs in East Malaysia with direct flights connecting Sabah and Sarawak to Penang for the first time, new direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Macau, Bangkok to Langkawi, Jakarta to Kuching and with our plans to expand further to Indochina region and Southern China, the timing is opportune,” she said.

She expected high internet traffic during this campaign period and tips are available on the website on how to best secure free seats, failing which super low fares are available.
Fly Asian Xpress (FAX) last Friday launched a no-frills long-haul service called AirAsia X to Manchester, Huangzhou and Tianjin which takes off in July, with fares as low as RM9.99 one way.
