Singapore’s move to slash the entrance fees to some of its tourist attractions by half for Malaysians is not expected to hurt domestic tourism. State Tourism and Environment Committee chairman Freddie Long brushed it off as “nothing unusual.”
“They are doing this to promote their Great Singapore Sale,” he said, adding that Malaysia had its own way of promoting tourism through its Mega Sale, held twice a year.
Long said the state had its own strategy to woo tourists, including plans for a midnight sale, which would allow people to shop past midnight.
On Friday, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) announced that Malaysians could enjoy selected tourist destinations at half price by allowing the use of the ringgit between May 25 and June 30.
Johor Tourist Guides Association chairman Jimmy Leong said Malaysians were not too receptive to visiting places or attractions which were completely man-made.
“They like visiting places which have a balance of nature along with artificial man-made items,” he said.
STB Southern Malaysia area director Alfred Poon said Malaysians who wanted to journey along the Singapore River, for example, would only pay RM12 instead of S$12 (RM27.10).
“That is a discount of over 50%,” he said, adding that the campaign would be held concurrently with the Great Singapore Sale. To qualify for the offer, Malaysians will have to produce their passports with valid embarkation cards.
“They will also have to prepare exact fares as no change will be given,” said Poon, adding that those who opted to pay in Singapore currency would be given a 50% discount off published rates.
